Enter the Group Chat...
Hi friends,
Living in the Caribbean has made me completely dependent on WhatsApp.
In fact, I often forget text messages even exist. Every once in a while I'll open my messages and discover someone texted me three weeks ago because apparently not everyone has gotten the memo that WhatsApp is the official communication platform of my current life.
And if you live here, you're in a group chat.
Or ten.
Or, if you're me...242
I wish I was kidding. But I actually counted for the purpose of this email. Not all of them are active, thankfully, but that should tell you something about the importance of group chats around here.
Recently I got added to an expat group and I have become absolutely obsessed with the psychology of this completely unhinged digital neighborhood.
There are 475 members. But honestly? Only about five people actually run the place.
You know the types.
There's The Police. Not an admin, but deeply committed to reminding everyone of the rules the second conflict appears.
Then there's The Activist, who usually started the conflict in the first place with a passionate rant about politics, vaccines, potholes, stray dogs, or some combination of all four.
Then we have The Opportunist Hothead. Every town has one. Quiet for weeks. Maybe months. But the second tension appears they materialize out of thin air like they've been training for this exact moment. Their entire role is conflict and they love a good bar fight.
Then the comedian arrives with a homemade meme to diffuse the situation.
And then there's people like me. The silent observers. The ones screenshotting everything and sending it to friends saying: "Can you BELIEVE these people?!"
And somewhere between the third argument about stray dogs and the seventh warning from The Police, I had a realization: This WhatsApp group is basically a nervous system!
(Stay with me.)
The group only works because all those personalities exist.
The Police notices threats.
The Activist pushes for change.
The Comedian reduces tension.
The silent observers quietly gather information.
Everybody has a role.
The body works the same way. The problem comes when one role takes over.
Then?
Chaos!
When the nervous system gets stuck in threat detection? Chaos.
When one muscle group takes over because something else isn't doing its job? Chaos.
When one person sends 47 consecutive messages about stray dogs Also chaos.
And this is exactly what I see with clients every day.
The body is incredibly smart. When one area isn't doing its job well, another area volunteers. For a while, this is actually helpful. The machine keeps running. The problem is that eventually the volunteers get resentful.
The hamstrings become The Police.
The pelvic floor becomes The Overachiever.
The neck becomes The Anxious Person Who Won't Stop Talking.
The low back becomes The One Carrying Everyone's Emotional Baggage.
At first it's a brilliant survival strategy. Then six months later somebody says: "Why are my hamstrings always tight?", "Why won't my neck relax?", "Why does my back hurt all the time?"
And often the answer isn't where the complaint is. The loudest voice isn't always the problem. Sometimes it's just the exhausted community member trying to keep the entire operation running.
Eventually, in every WhatsApp group, the admin has to step in.
Enough. We've talked about this for three days. The comments are now closed. We're moving on.
I'd like to think that's where I come in.
If you've been living with pain, weakness, tightness, leaking, pressure, or a body that just feels "off"—whether it's been a week or a year—sometimes you need someone to figure out who in the group chat is causing the drama. And then help restore some order.
No guesswork. No random stretching. No throwing exercises at the wall and hoping something sticks. Just figuring out who's working too hard, who's not showing up at all, and helping everybody get back to their actual job.
